Amateur Radio Training & Licensing

Amateur Radio Training & Licensing

An Amateur Radio licence gives a lot of privileges and some training is needed if you are to operate radio equipment safely in a way which does not harm you or cause interference to others.

However, we are here to help you get licensed, and it’s not as difficult as it may seem.  Training is done in stages and at your speed.  Once you have passed the foundation licence, you can operate the club’s radio equipment under supervision.   Primary school children have passed the foundation exam, so in theory at least, Amateur Radio is open to everyone.

Training Courses

While the society can help you prepare for the amateur radio licence exams, and give you lots of practical experience of using radio equipment, most people find that an organised course is the quickest way to get licensed.  We are fortunate to live near the Ham Radio Academy sponsored by Martin Lynch & Sons in Staines.  We recommend their courses as they are well resourced and professionally delivered.

Foundation training usually takes two full days.  Intermediate training usually takes three full days.  Advanced training is usually done as a distance learning course over a longer period, with a formal exam when you are ready.
